Crown jewel of our hikes, the challenging uphill ways to the summit craters of the highest active volcano in Europe, with all the views and no shortcuts.

A fully immersive, sustainable and niche expedition to the top of Mount Etna and its active area, starting from the highest trailheads at 1750m of altitude, using the most panoramic hiking-only trails and leaving behind mechanical aids and tourist routes.

This long day hike features a stunning 1500+ metres ascent through all the high altitude sections of the Etna up until exploring the barren, sulphuric, colourful and dramatic summit active craters.

These are tours that do not involve significant physical activity and are suitable for families with very young children and people with walking limitations.

Hikes can be taken by most people in good health, families with active lifestyles and by children who are used to the outdoors.

Trails are best suited for people who are in good physical conditions and fit, with some hiking experience and who can handle higher altitudes.

Hard

Trails are dedicated to people with a high fitness level that have done similar hikes before and who can handle long ascents, high altitude and prolonged exercise.

Description

For travelers who want to discover hidden routes at medium altitude on the pristine slopes
of Etna, among endemic vegetation and breathtaking landscapes.

This excursion will allow us to explore several lateral craters and cold lava flows from recent eruptions and also from the volcano,
covering altitudes between 1800m and 2100m on foot, away from the beaten track and tourist itineraries.

Equipment

Required equipment: Hiking boots (can be rented), helmets (provided), 2,5L water, long trousers
Recommended equipment: Backpack, wind/rain jacket (can be rented), fleece and gloves (all year), hiking sticks (optional, provided), headband, sunscreen, packed lunch

Punto d'incontro

Rifugio Citelli (Etna Est): It can be reached from the Mareneve regional road both from Fornazzo (eastern side) and from Linguaglossa (north-eastern side). It is a well-paved, two-lane tourist road that can be traveled by any means of transport. When the refuge is open, catering, toilets and overnight accommodation are available.

Rifugio Sapienza (Etna Sud): can be reached by provinciale road 92 (SP92) or from da Zafferana Etnea (Eastern side) or from Nicolosi (South-Eastern side). It is a well-paved, two-lane tourist road that can be traveled by any means of transport. At the meeting point there is large free and paid parking available with a bar, toilets and catering available.

Further information

Our hikes and tours start from meeting points that can be comfortably reached by road. The meeting times and locations are different with different tour options and throughout the year. These will be confirmed when booking each hike.

All the hikes that reach middle or high altitude and the active craters can be limited by volcanic activity, temporary restrictions, harsh weather, snow/ice coverage or other major inconveniences. Instead, if the hike or tour is cancelled by the partecipant, our cancellation policy is the following:

No fee until 48 hours before the trip
50% cancellation fee until 24 hours before the trip
100% cancellation fee on the day of the trip

Participants must follow all instructions provided before and during the excursion by the guide(s). Any action different from these will be excluded from insurance coverage.
